Maybe I am not a geek after all!!

Never heard of that one Sarah. I am currently reading A Farewell to Arms but Ernest Hemmingway. About 10 pages from the end actually and then I am going to start Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons. That one is for the book club they have at school.

Yesterday I found out that one of my friends has an abusive boyfriend. I'm scared for her; she needs to get out of that relationship.

Agree!!! It is a very scary thing and the worst part is if she chooses to stay with him there is really nothing you can do. In most cases the person has to want out themselves. Hopefully she'll wise up and realize no matter how much he says he loves her or whatever the case may be, he will not change and she will see that. I'll say a prayer for your friend!

Ah! I've never read A Farewell to Arms, but after reading The Old Man and the Sea, I've vowed never to read another Hemmingway book again....I can honestly say it was one of the most dull, tedious, and frustratingly predictable books I've ever had the misfortune to read in my life.

And my mother got me The Golden Compass which I also started, but I've never been terribly into that sort of fantasy olden-times sort of books....I suppose I'll give it a shot, though, since one of my best friends LOVES it....plus, I've got my Seventeen Magazine but that's sort of gone down the drain since the new editor came.....

What was your favorite book? I have to say, I'm a giant Harry Potter nerd I especially liked the 3rd and the 6th.....but I also really liked the DaVinci Code, and Kite Runner, heartbreaking thought it was....among loads others............the Harry Potters (but not the 5th one, or the epilogue) will always remain my favorites, but it's like....every day I think of a different book that I've read that I loved and that's my new favorite of the day. Like...The Giver!! That was such a fantastic book, and I just thought of it now, and maybe I'll hafta add that one to my list. And I also really liked The Misfits.

Oooo favourite book that is a difficult one. Again like you I am a huge Harry Potter geek. My favs are 3rd and 7th. Harry Potter is fantastic and got me into reading actually when I was about 8 or something and then no going back, lol. Apart from HP my favourite much be Catcher in the Rye, such an amazing book with a simple idea but a complex message. I really liked the Regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker. All three books are simply awesome.

I take it you don't like Hemmingway then?? lol Farewell to Arms is actually quite good, I have a fasination with the war especailly WWI so it's my kind of book. I don't think I will read any of his others but it is good to try another author.

I really want to read the Kite Runner. I wanted to see it at the cinema too but no one wanted to come with me Take it you liked it then??

Yeah...actually, I first tried to read Harry Potter in 1st grade when my grandma got it for me as a gift, and I hadn't even gotten to when Hagrid comes to get him yet, when I decided I didn't get it, and it was boring, and I didn't come near them again until late 3rd grade, when absolutely EVERYONE was reading them, because I think the 4th book had just come out...? Does 6 years ago sound about right for that? Anyways, so I decided to give it another shot, and I LOVED it, and had devoured all 4 of them before 4th grade was half over.

I really liked Kite Runner, but it was so....frustrating.....see, you get so angry at the main character, and it's hard to read a book where you dislike the main character....but it was very touching. I saw the film with my mother, actually, and it was really good too, except they left out two pretty important parts to the book, which dissapointed me.

I don't know about Hemmingway....I feel bad judging a writer on just one book....I mean, even JK Rowling....her writing developed so much just over the Harry Potter series! And if I had just read the 5th book, I would have thought her writing was very overrated, nothing special, and maybe even a little annoying.....but they forced us to read The Old Man and the Sea in school, and we had to analyze it and stuff......make connections to like GOD and romance and whatnot, and the whole time I kept thinking....maybe he just wrote a dull story about a determined old man? It one a NOBEL PRIZE.....and sorry, but I've read much more interesting, deep and complex writing....and even very simple writing that was wonderful in it's simplicity.....but I feel like with this book, he was like...making a statement....like those artists who draw a big purple dot in the middle of a big white canvas and call it art, to make a statement. I think maybe it was just a big F You to the literary world, and that's cool. But it doesn't mean I want to read it.

And Catcher also dissapointed me...after The Good Girl....I'm thinking it's going to be FANTASTIC, and I thought it was annoying! I mean, GOD, enough with the complaining! And I know he has depression, and it's supposed to be like a character study...and maybe if I was a psychologist, I'd find it highly interesting, but as I am............I thought it was a bit dull. If I wanted to hear someone moaning, I could just talk to myself, right?
Maybe it's just that I'm a frustrated High Schooler, and I already know what it's like......I dunno.
I feel like something must be wrong with me, hating all these classics!

Studying books in school can ruin them. Like for my AS level last year we had to study Alice Walker's The Colour Purple. Well when I first read it I thought it was alright but after studying it and writing essays over and over on it think it has lost the alright bit about it. Granted it wasn't a great book to begin with but now I HATE it, lol.

I know what you mean about Catcher in the Rye. I read it before I even knew about Jake and The Good Girl. Maybe I wasn't expecting an amazing book. I dunno. Apparnetly the guy who shot Jon Lennon did so after reading this book. I don't understand why it should have had such an affect on him. I recently read Franny and Zooey by the same author and also enjoyed that book. It is simple but comes together right near the end. I loved it. Same kind of style as Cathcher so if you didin't like that you might not like Franny and Zooey.

Classics I find can be totally over rated. It's all about finding books that you like, not about worrying if they are classics or not

@Rich, I know the feeling.

@Rach, yeah I've been doing a lot of DDR for exercise. But since I was still in pain today, I couldn't, so I felt so bad. >.<

@Sarah, Catcher is one of those books you either love or hate.

Random fact: Tomorrow I'm going for a walk with my friend/diet partner. I wonder how my hurt knee will handle all that.
