I love the movie, but it's surprisingly different from the book. (The book is called "Rocket Boys" by Homer Hickam.)
Anyway, I first saw this movie in communications class in 7th grade, and I saw Jake and was like "Wow. That guy is very good-looking".
The movie itself has such a strong message, and it kind of reminds me of the quote in my signature.
I highly recommend seeing the movie, AND reading the Coalwood trilogy (all written by Homer Hickam, all true).

Today I watched October Sky. I guess, it was very touching, specially the relationship between son and father.
The movie makes you believe, that everyone can fill their dreams, if you really try.
I loved the moment, when they tried to stop the train, it was so funny. I cried also, in a few moments. It's a great movie, clearly. I would like to read the book, but I'm not sure if it's translated in my language, guess not.
And Jake, yeah, he was magnificent. I've noticed, that he often has to speak with different accents. Cool.

Yes, the young Jake was magnificent in that movie. I'm glad you liked it, Anda.

You probably know that this beautiful story was based on real facts. Young Homer's determination, which was remarkable, brought him all the way to the Nasa. I believe Homer Hickman Jr. to be alive and still working there.

The most touching scene for me was when Homer had to go back in the coal mine, because his father had an accident and he had to take his place. And then... he stood in the elevator, ready to go down in that dark narrow shaft, and all the time he was watching the stars in the sky, and regretting the dream he would never realize.
Jake's face there was absolutely heartbreaking.

I agree with you, that scene was heartbreaking, I think I had tears in my eyes. I thought about his dream, that he has to give up.. I knew he won't, but anyway.

The fact, that movie is based on true story, makes it even better, because all the things you can learn from the movie, they are all real and worth to believe in.

I absolutely loved October sky. It shows that with determination of the heart, all your dreams can come true. I can't find it anywhere to buy though and I live in the US, boo but I live in a small town where you can't find much XD

Hi Taryn, nice to have another great Jake Gyllenhaal admirer among us. Welcome! I'm Sheilah from Europe.
It doesn't matter where you live... You can buy Region 1 DVDs without any risk at Amazon.com, online shop. Here's the link:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_d?url=search-alias%3Ddvd&field-keywords=october+Sky&x=0&y=0

I used their services (Amazon.co.uk, for Europe) on several occasions. Always quick deliveries, and the DVDs in very good condition... even the cheaper ones. You will have to register first, of course.

There are many sites who sell DVDs. Me... I'm a satisfied Amazon costumer.
See ya!
