I AGREE COMPLETELY! It really did make me think that's how the movie was going to go, but surprised me it didn't.

Saw Brothers this afternoon. It's a powerful film, but left me somewhat unsatisfied. (I deliberately didn't read any critics' reviews beforehand; now I'll check them out to see whether I agree with them.) Naturally, I wanted much more Jake. I was surprised at how secondary his role was, even though his character is an important figure. The trailer does give a misleading spin on the story, and the promotion stills show scenes that are not in the movie--specifically, Jake's scenes in the prison and the bar.

The performances are incredibly strong. This is the best Tobey Maguire I've ever seen, and he deserves to be nominated for several major awards. His character is clearly the center of the film.

Jake is so amazing I can barely find words. Naturally I'm prejudiced because I've been so attached to everything he's done (and does) since first seeing him in BBM. Here he creates the character of Tommy with such subtlety and precision, and complete naturalness. IMO, Jake's portrayal of drunkenness is perfection. Doing a convincing drunk is not as easy as you would think, and again, when Jake does it, it's crystal clear, but he allows you to understand what other things are going on with Tommy even in that impaired state. One wonderful thing about Jake in this role is that we get to see that killer smile a lot. Nothing makes me happier! And what a treat to see Jake on ice skates. He does pretty well, too. But why wouldn't he? He's perfect, to quote Natalie Portman.

And could anyone be more beautiful than Natalie Portman? She did her part with excellence, though she spent about half her screen time crying. That must have been tough on her, and I think her role was weakly written. I wanted to see more edges, more of the erratic behavior that commonly characterizes people who are grieving. Real mothers lose their tempers and forget to do laundry and serve canned beefaroni for supper. She was too ideal.

Long time lurker, first time poster. (Apparently I had an account registered. )

I saw the movie twice this weekend. Once on Friday, which also happened to be my bday(thank you, Jake for that AMAZING present!), and once again yesterday. I absolutley LOVE it. All of the actors did an amazing job. And I agree with one of the previous posters who said the trailer was misleading. Although it was a good misleading.

I plan to see it a few more times while in it's theater run.

I also thought that the Trailers were misleading, although I wasn't disappointed w/ any of their performances. I thought Natalie looked awful thin. They were all AMAZING!

Considering the two current heavyweights it was up against this weekend it did really well. Unfortunately The Blind Side and New Moon are just dominating the box office. But if you think about it, Brothers was still #1 out of the movies that were released last weekend, so still a success.

To giorgetto: Donīt be upset, the woman from cinestar which i called today told me that Brothers starts in January. And that isnīt too long to wait, right? Donīt forget itīs a small movie and thatīs why we havenīt heard about it in germany.

You're very welcome, hon. Can you get to see Brothers soon? Are you not in the USA?

I always have so much to say. I'm flattered when I see that someone has taken the time to read my reflections.

Oh def! I'm sure we would all prefer his films to be a success but any movie released the last few weekends just kinda had no hope. People are buying what the Twilight franchise is selling.
