Ditto. That's what I meant by less 'cartoonish', a bit more gritty (or as much as Disney can be )

PoP looks as if it has all the color and action of the best Indiana Jones movies, or Pirates of the Caribbean. It's an enormous, sweeping film. Jake looks fantastic, awesome, in that rugged style. The hair really works for me. And those arms, that torso... I hope he had a good time making this movie. Nothing in my own life experience offers even a clue as to what it must have been like for him, to be the central figure in a production of this size.

The promotion on this will be huge, and Jake will no doubt be locked into many appearances worldwide for several months. That would be this time next year, folks. Get ready for a feast of Jake.

If PoP is a hit, Jake's career will go through the roof and over the moon.

Exclusive: Gyllenhaal On Persia
And Mike Newell on his buff hero

With Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time now in post-production, Jake Gyllenhaal and Mike Newell took time to give us the low-down on the Bruckheimer sword-and-sandal epic for Empire's soon-to-hit-stores July issue.

As Dastan, Gyllenhaal is charged with battling the shadowy cult of assassins The Hanssansin, a heroic role that the newly-buff leading man claims says him to the role. "I'm always fascinated with these kinds of stories of the hero's journey," Gyllenhaal told us. "You're playing a legitimate hero, you know? I think it's an honour to do that."

Newell, meanwhile, says there's much more to Prince Of Persia than Gyllenhaal roaming the sixth century with his top off. "This isn't just kind of kiss kiss, bang bang," stressed the Four Weddings And A Funeral director. "It's like a superheated, super-actioned Noah story. It's what happens when the gods get angry and so fed up with humans they want to rub them out and start all over again."

But Newell's promising that his leading man will have the tools to meet all this divine fury blow-for-blow. "There's this wonderful line - and I can't remember where this comes from - which says, 'So long as there is just one man, you can't kill us all...'"

The Girls' Guide to Comic Con 2009
'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time'
Women will be rushing the stage, offering to do star Jake Gyllenhaal's laundry on those washboard abs that he acquired for the film, since he spends much of it fighting, shirtless or both. Jake, we don't want to know how to quit you.

Aahh...I wish I could go to Comic Con. I'll be in San Francisco the week before it for another convention, and they're offering bus rides to Comic Con...I just can't take any more time off work. Ugh.

"Disney has left its upcoming Jake Gyllenhaal live-action video-game adaptation Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time off its Thursday film panel schedule; it will be the subject of a Friday panel on the comics and graphic novel tie-ins. But it's possible Disney could sneak in a glimpse at new footage from the movie, much as it sneaked a tease for Tron last year. Persia opens May 28, 2010."

"I’ll be in San Diego next Friday for an 11:30 am Q&A panel about the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time graphic novel anthology I’m writing for Disney, with artists Todd McFarlane, Cameron Stewart, Bernard Chang, Tommy Lee Edwards, Josh Middleton, and Niko Henrichon, many of whom will be on the panel as well. (Check the Comic-Con schedule for updated details.)

It’s been a very cool project and one I’ve had a lot of fun doing. The book is a prequel to the movie (I use the word “prequel” advisedly, for those who think time is like a river that flows swift and sure in one direction), with each chapter drawn by a different artist in a different style. It’ll be published next April as part of the Prince of Persia movie pre-launch.

This is the second Prince of Persia graphic novel I’ve been involved with — the first, written by A.B. Sina and illustrated by LeUyen Pham and Alex Puvilland, was published last year by First Second Books — and they’re very different projects. Whereas the First Second book is deliberately separate from the games and movie — linked thematically, rather than through plot and characters — the Disney book is firmly in the universe of the movie. It offered a chance to establish, and expand on, the characters’ world and back stories beyond what’s in the film.

Most enjoyably, it’s given me an opportunity to revisit the story and characters of the original game for the first time in two decades — though in a way that’s kind of hard to explain, until you read the book.

Hope to see you next Friday, those of you who can make it!"

I think he will talk about the movie!
