In the months leading to the release of PoP, I posted some thoughts similar to yours. I always felt a bit uneasy about this production--not exactly sure why. If the movie is a hit, I said, it will turn Jake into a megastar; if not, he'll be a bit embarrassed but his career won't suffer.

Now that I've seen the film, I would be surprised if they made any more. According to the figures you quote, PoP has so far earned over $17 million above costs. So it hasn't lost money, it just hasn't earned a huge profit: about 8%. It will probably pull in a bit more before it goes to DVD, and then DVD will bring in money too (for some films this is where they make their profits, actually).

I get the impression that Jake's name has become very widely known from this movie, and that he is now a bigger star than before. He has a long career ahead of him. Unless he does something to sabotage himself, he should be fine. Careers rise and fall, go into slumps and revive. Actors make comebacks after lean years (which Jake isn't in anyway at this point). Look at Robert Downey, Jr. He screwed up with drugs and even went to jail several times. Now he's back on top, working steadily, and is a great audience favorite. He's a super actor, and so is Jake. He'll survive PoP. (I can't believe I'd say this, but I may go back and see PoP again, just to enjoy Jake.)

Congrats! She looks so beautiful! He's pretty nice looking.

I saw this yesterday in the Bulgarian press. It was a big surprise for me. First I thought that she could have many many fans like unmarried woman, but if she already have founded her true love, what's better than this?

I don't really know how to start.Even from the begining some people said the film would flop even if they had no idea what was all about. I've seen the film like 3 times by now and of course i thought it was great. Many people say that the film was not so great because of Jake, cause he doesn't look like an action hero and he's not masculine enough. I thought that he did more than a decent job and it wasn't only his fault because the film wasn't considered by some people that great.I've seen the film only because of Jake and i think lots more have seen the film only because of him.I'm going to say one thing and i hope you guys won't mind.I'm talking about Gemma's character.I've got nothing against Gemma,i think she's amazing but her role was in a way useless.Ok she was the one who helped Dastan to protect the dagger, but the fact that she was a spoiled princess and got on Dastans' nerves didn't really impress me. I didn't want to sound like a hursh person,it's just an opinion and i loved the film because Jake was amazing.

I myself prefer Jake when he looks a normal weight, so I can't imagine anyone saying he wasn't large enough....that's crazy! Look at Spiderman, etc.

You know, I'm 50 years old. I watched so and so movies, I can't count it.
I love Indy, I love the 3 old Star wars, I love the Brendan Fraser 's Mummy, Terminator, Abyss, Matrix, Lord of the ring or Harry Potter... I'm always afraid because of POP. Why ? Not relation with Jake, that i really LOVE (you know that) but a big Disney like for exemple Pirates from caraibes because I don't like very much this kind of movies. Too artificial ? So I'm afraid a little (I'll see POP this saturday, 3 days to wait) and I'll tell you my opinion after.

But i'm SURE that is not the Jake'fault. If it doesn't work.

a great Hollywood producer said "3 reasons for a good movie : a good story, a good story and a good story.

Since they forget it too often.

PoP was ok, but I think the Pirate movies were better because they were actually really fun to watch... at least for me. That might or might not be the case for other people. Even though Jake did a good job in PoP, I felt a little bored with the movie at times.

Pirates of the Caribbean was unbearable for me.

POP was fun because of Jake, but the film has many problems in direction, screenplay and editing!
And Gemma Arterton is very bad!

First, thanks to those of you who found my comments helpful.

What's been said here by each person about PoP and the actors in it is completely true--because it's all a matter of personal taste and expectation. I'm not drawn to action movies generally; I have seen only a few clips from Pirates of the Carribbean, but have seen the Indiana Jones series, some of the Star Wars, a little of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises, etc. But for those who like them, they're great.

So PoP would have to be sensational for me to enjoy it. I thought the biggest weakness was the story itself. The second weakness was in not letting Jake cut loose and use his humor more. It was in there, but not strongly enough. He had some excellent moments. Jake's talent is unquestionable, and for me one of his outstanding qualities as an actor is believability. Everything he does is natural, real, convincing, and totally right for what's taking place. He brought that to PoP, same as every other film he's made.

Disney promoted PoP intensely for months. I've never been so aware of a movie promotion. I believe they gave too much of the film away long before it opened. Maybe the producer and the studio doubted that the film would make it on its own, so they started very early with the hype. Maybe they understood that Jake would be a hard sell as an action hero unless they prepared the world for him. Jake is his own best ambassador. It's no wonder the studio put him out there so often and so widely. He did his part, onscreen and off. He couldn't have done more. He should get a large share of the credit for whatever success PoP finds.

I saw POP last thursday. I'll probably go to see it again, only because of Jake (actually I'm not sure, it will depend on my bank account, as theatre are quite expensive)

I loved Jake (as usual), I found him great as an action hero, noy a standard one, but he played the role of the young, sensitive and brave Dastan very well (I love Jake's goofy attitude). He dosen't take him too seriously, and that's great, cause he has a great humour and he can make fun of himself. That's remarkable.

unfortunatly, I was a little bit disappointed by the movie: actually I knew before that POP is not the kind of movie I go crazy for, I mean, I'm not really into big production and action movie (star wars is the only ecception, but Star Wars is a pillar, so it's quite different).
I think that the plot had some problemes, and Gemma Artenton is far from the oscar, but there was also something missing. I saw Pirates of the carribean, and I really liked it (even if I found Orlando Bloom terrible), but certainly Johnny Deep make the difference (I adore Jake, but Johnny is an astonishing actor).

Maybe I should see POP again, but my first impression wasn't that positive: it's a nice movie, special effect are amazing, Jake plays very well. But still there's somethning missing.

I think that one of you "hit the nail on the head"...Jake is so hilarious in person; they should have let him cut loose on his humor. There were very few jokes, & like someone else said, they had already shown this in the trailer.
