Heh, I have my doubts of Memoirs of a Geisha because of the Chinese actors acting geishas and speaking English-thing, but I would want too see it anyways.

a majority of the actors (mostly the children) are actually japanese and they had to learn english just for the movie. the felt like t made it more authentic...which i think it did!

I will never understand that issue concerning Chinese actors and that they speak English and all that...

I understand Japanese people's concern about the nationality of the stars, due to that rivalry (wouldn't say hatred as I read once) between Japan and China, but it's a movie made for an international audience.

If the movie was talked in Japanese I bet it would have flopped big time at the box office (more than it actually did). Not many people are fond of watching movies that are not in English.

The English speaking thing didn't get me out of the movie at all... au contraire it really made me get into it even more... I loved the movie by the way

Mmmm honestly I disagree with that... I thought it was pretty stupid to do a movie about Japan, with chinese actors, and in English!!! I know it was aimed at an international audience but it would have kept the intensity and the power of the story if the movie had been in japanese, with people speaking japanese(that wouldnt have been possible with Chinese actors, I think...). I didnt go to see the movie because of that

Actually for me it was almost an outrage - even if I have no japanese roots, or whatever - because it show again how the american cinema cant make the effort to take what would have been a risk on the US market, which means make a movie in japanese to at least, keep the authenticity of the whole thing... Funny thing is that the movie would have been a HUGE hit in Europe as we are quite fond of asiatic movies and dont mind at all seeing them in chinese, japanese, korean, whatever...

Imagine "In The Mood for Love" in English *killer thought"...

Did you see 2046? It was interesting, but ITMFL was muuuuch better... 2046 was confusing...

I also looooved Chungking Express(brilliant), Ashes of Time, and some others great one... Im a total WKW fan, and Im soooo happy he's in the Jury in Cannes this year

That's right I'd forgotten! How cool. He's not just on the jury either, but president of it! It's such an honor. I'm so happy for him too. They've always loved him at Cannes.

Ahh I'd heard that about 2046, that it wasn't as good as ITMFL, so I've been reluctant to see it. Also cause I heard Maggie's only in it for a few minutes (cause filming ITMFL took so much out of her apparently). Others of WKW's I've seen:

Chungking Express (love Faye Wong too), Happy Together (a favorite after ITMFL), Days of Being Wild (young Maggie! )...I wanna see them all eventually.

Yay! I'm so happy there's another WKW fan on these boards! Hehe go WKW!!

The thing with Memoirs being in English I like better. The only reason why is this, when I see movies with subtitles I find myself reading subtitles and not actually watching the movie. So in reality it's just like reading a book, and reading isn't my favorite thing to do in the world (I do read, just when I am really bored) so I'd rather it be in a language that I understand.

Now lemme say this. I have seen movies in their actual language and I do like it, I think it sounds cool but the only way that I can do that is if I know I can watch it multiple times so that way I can read it like once and then know what is going on and concentrate mostly on the pictures displayed on the screen. Like I watched Phantom of the Opera in English over and over again so therefore I knew what was happening and I knew basically all the words so then I put it in French. I don't know I am weird...
