June 28th, 2006 New York City: Claptrap Book Reading
My sister and I got to the city at like 6:15 pm and we were starving so we decided to have some Pizza Hut before we went. Kinda a bad and good decision b/c the pizza was SO good but we ended up getting to the book reading a little late. We got there around 7:20 pm but thankfully the reading didn't start. The moment I walked in I saw Maggie just walking around I like stopped in my tracks! Thats something you don't see everyday! Then I saw Peter! And I must say he is a VERY good looking man (I personally loved his hair) haha! Well then I saw Naomi and Mr.Gyllenhaal and they were chatting with people. I noticed that everyone kinda looked the same and I realized that it was like the whole Gyllenhaal family! They came out to support Stephen, it was a great sight. I looked around for Jake but he wasn't there . The book store, Housing Works was FILLED up! I'd say about over 50 people showed up! Since all the chairs were taken we had to stand the whole time (OUCH!). I was standing by a table that had the books for sale and ALL of Mr.Gyllenhaal's books were GONE! I was so upset b/c I wanted to buy one. Mary Gordon (the other lady reading her book "Pearl") read first. Now... I'm not gonna lie it was kinda boring.. But we listened and the story had its moments. After she was done Cantara (Stephen's publisher) went up and introduced Stephen! When he got up there you could tell he was nervous. He had every right to be too since this was his first book reading ever! I was standing next to Alaina (Incendiary) and Dani (i wuv jakey) and we gave each other glances of "OMG!" being there was just so surreal! Stephen read some of the poetry that is available online but here are the poems that I remember: The Man, Axiom, Communion, Photosynthesis, Tender, Bread, Grammar (A SONNET!), At 25, True Love, Pilot, Canon, Watching You Strip/My Daughter, 8:46 AM, Plan B, Shoe Polish. The poem "At 25" is an ode to Jake and it is a VERY beautiful poem. Full of passion and love all eloquently written. The poem "Watching You Strip/My Daughter" was about when Maggie did the play "Closer" in LA and she was Alice (Natalie Portman's character in the movie) It was so adorable because Maggie was crying a little when her dad was reading it! Mr. Gyllenhaal's poems are like a inside look into his mind. He is brilliant! My sister pointed out that his poems resemble those of EE Cummings. I didn't want to seem rude during the reading by taking alot of pictures and since I was really far away most of my pictures came out crappy! DARN! Well here's a good one of Mr.Gyllenhaal at the podium!
He did a great job for his first time and really kept the audience captivated! After the reading there was a question and answer session with the writers. I was bad and didn't pay attention because I was talking to Stephen's publisher, Cantara! What a lovely women! She was very excited to speak to me about Stephen's writing and us Jake fans! We talked about the questions that Jake Watch sent into for Mr.Gyllenhaal to answer and she told me that he carries them around in his pocket and still has to finish answering them. She said that he calls us his "daughters" and we are "the girls!" haha! (Now I know all you guys out there must feel left out but IHJ is made up of a majority of ladies! So no hard feelings!) Cantara was SO sweet and I'm really glad I got to speak with her. OH and I also met another member from IHJ here, Gale (galinab123). She was so nice too! We grabbed one of the last 5 books Cantara just put out and bought it. Then my sister and I made our way to the line where Stephen was signing. We saw Peter Sarsgaard on the way and we just had to say hi since we both LOVE him. We walked up to him and I was like "Hey Peter!!" and he smiled and was like "Hey!" he was SO approachable and really friendly. I said "I just wanted to tell you that you ROCK!" hah! He thanked me and we got high fives! We told him that we loved him on SNL and that he's a great actor. I also told him who I was and that I was the girl that owned that site for his soon to be brother-in-law IHeartJake.Com and he was really surprised! He was like "Really?! WOW!". Then he said "Ahh I see you got the book!" and I said "Yeah I'm here supporting" and he gave some "insider info"! He said that thats his back in the picture on the cover of the book! It was taken on a camera phone and that was him doing the whole "red carpet" thing! My sister being the crazy person that she is asked him if "Hayden Christensen is really that hot in person" (Peter was in the movie "Shattered Glass" with Hayden and my sister LOVES him) and Peter laughed! He was like "uhhh well that's not really my field" LOL It was soo funny! I then told Peter, "tell Jake I said 'Hey'" and he's like "OF COARSE!" My sis and I both got pics w/ him! He was so great!
Then I went to get my book signed and I talked to Mr. Gyllenhaal and introduced myself! He was so sweet and when I told him I was the girl from IHeartJake.Com he was like "Oh! Really!!" It was so great. I told him that everyone loves his poetry and we can't wait for more! I asked him if Jake was doing re-shoots and he said "yeah" and I said that us fans really need something new about this movie and that we are on the edge of our seats! He laughed and agreed with me. I told him to send Jake my regards and he said "Sure!" he was very nice and I'm glad I got to talk to him. He wrote "To Ally Thank you for coming on my first night". It was already 9:00 PM and we had to go on the subway to catch the train home so on my way out I decided to say a quick hey to Maggie! She looked SO pretty and really pregnant! LOL She's really tall in person but she seemed so sweet so I went up to her and basically said "Hey my name is Ally and I just wanted to tell you I'm a big fan!" and she was like "awww! thank you!" I congratualted her on her pregnancy and she was so gracious! I asked her for a pic and she was like "aw! sure!"
She was so sweet and friendly! I had a great time and I want to thank my fabulous sister Erika for coming with me and sitting through that lady's book reading! I have to admit I think it was a very succesful night for Mr.Gyllenhaal and IHJ What a great combination don't ya think!

Thanks, Ally. You are totally awesome as always. You do us so proud as a vital connection between the Gyllenhaal family and us.... You really match them in intelligence, talent and grace. We love you... and hope you get some good rest.
(Yeeeehawww, Jake's back on our coast. I love when that happens.)
Didja notice you made your 5,000th post? No wonder you're pooped.

hi Ally,
I also attended the event last night and it was Awesome. I'd seen Stephen and Maggie earlier in the evening and then, of course, later Naomi and Peter. It really was incredible to see all the Gyllenhaal/Foner family together for this really important event for Stephen. I'm glad I didn't decide to blow it off and go home after a day trudging around a muggy NYC.
