Avatar opportunity?
« Thread started on: Feb 23rd, 2010, 3:12pm »

Jake was offered the part of Sam Worthington.

'Maybe they sensed my lack of 100% commitment from me. Maybe it was the subject matter. This was a big 'Star Wars'-type movie. They’re both serious actors.' - Cameron

I did read this a while ago, but today it's all over twitter.

I'm not sure, i don't think it would of been the best move for Jake but he is starring in one of next years biggest blockbusters..(i would have quite liked to have seen blue jake )

I don't quite follow the quote--who's saying what? Who had the lack of commitment?

I saw Avatar over the weekend, and I kept imagining Jake in the part! It seemed perfect for him. However, Sam Worthington was fine, and he's a great-looking guy.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Matt Damon Said No to James Cameron and AVATAR

"Imagine if Matt Damon had played Jake Sully in James Cameron’s Avatar. Or what if Jake Gyllenhaal had? Would the movie have gone on to gross over $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office, or would having a major movie star as the lead detracted from your enjoyment? The fact is…it almost happened. According to Cameron, both stars declined playing the part after he reached out to them to placate the studio chiefs at Fox.

“I don’t think they ever had a problem with the CG, ” Cameron said to the LA Times. “Honestly, did I go out and try to woo them? No. I had my heart set on Sam. Maybe they sensed my lack of 100% commitment from me. Maybe it was the subject matter. This was a big ‘Star Wars‘-type movie. They’re both serious actors.”

While it might have helped to have Damon on the poster, I think having a relative unknown (Sam Worthington) play Jake Sully absolutely made Avatar better. As you watched Worthington on screen, you didn’t see any baggage from previous roles…instead, you could project onto him whatever you were feeling as you watched the movie. Looking back, I can see why Fox would be nervous about Worthington, but now that Cameron’s last two films have made over $4 billion at the worldwide box office, I think it’s safe to leave the casting to him."

I saw Avatar and thought it was a really good film, but the story was a copy of Pocahontas.

LOL read this:
http://thenextweb.com/shareables/2010/01/05/pocahontas-avatar/

Story-wise, it was unoriginal.

But the film was still very entertaining, especially if you saw it in 3-D. I'm glad Jake didn't do it though because in my opinion he would have been wrong for the role. Sam Worthington was perfect for the character, even if his American accent was off at times. I can kind of see Matt Damon in the role, but not Jake.

The Pocahontas thing is hilarious, and dead on. How does James Cameron get away with it? For me, the first half of Avatar was entertaining, especially because of the 3D. But the second half felt routine and I got bored. I will be pissed if it wins the Academy Award as best picture, but it probably will.

And come to think of it, the role of Jake would not have been challenging enough for our Jake, though he would have put his own special stamp on it. I don't see Matt Damon in the part, but he would have done a great job nevertheless. He's also one of my faves.

In my opinion, it was a right choice of Jake...
I think that about the special effects, Avatar had excellent results and beautiful, but the story, the content... predictable....
So, I agree with other users who have the same opinion.

IMO Avatar didn't suit with Jake way of acting,
i found Avatar story quite boering, at least it's all about effects, and maybe Jake didn't like a movie like this...
